Focus: Character Development

Day 3: Wednesday, April 7, 201X

6) Attention-Getter: (5 min)

The teacher will read the picture book Crazy Horse's Vision.

7) Activities; model → guided practice → independent practice:

A. Model (20 min)

  • The teacher will model how to use the text to support character traits.
  • (Some students will have already done this on Day 1 and Day 2)
  • The teacher will make a chart while reading.
  • The chart will display the title, the strategy and the evidence from the text.
  • The teacher will ask for students suggestions after modeling. (What are Crazy Horse's character traits? How do we know that these are his traits? Does the author tell us or do we find out through the characters actions?) The chart should reflect the answers to these questions. "Trait: How do we know?"
  • The teacher will model how to "mingle" or discuss ideas from our books.
  • The teacher also will model how to do a "Book Talk". He or she will hold up the book and make a few comments about the characters in the book. Then they will say if they recommend the book.

B. Guided Practice (35min)

  • Before going into stations, the students will mingle with others in the class about the characters in their books.
  • The teacher will have four students complete their video "Book Talks" while the other students are moving to the stations.
  • Students will bring post-its with them.
  • Students will move throughout stations.
  • Some students will meet with the teacher to discuss "My questions", "Character Sketch", or "Self Talk" strategies.
  • Some students will work with a partner on "Context Clues"
  • Some students will read quietly with their group.

C. Individual (30 min)

  • Some students will read independently, or work on skills such as "Writing Prompt", Spelling activities, "Predict-a-Plot"and "Visualizing poetry."
